The student can be 14 years old to take the class portion (provided they turn 15 by class end date) but cannot get their permit till they are 15 years old.
The state requires that any person under the age of 18 must take a Driver’s Education course consisting of 30 hours of Classroom, 6 hours of Behind the Wheel driving, and 6 hours of observation.
Before the student can get their license, the following must also be met:
First, a student must be enrolled in a class at ABC. On the first day of class at ABC, the student will receive all necessary paperwork to obtain their permit. Any time after that 1st day of class, the student can go to any DMV to get their permit. At the DMV, be prepared to take a written test, sign test and vision test. The written test is based on the SOS Rules of the Road booklet-available online at SOS website. www.cyberdriveillinois.com
The student will receive the following paperwork from ABC to get their permit at DMV:
1) Permit Application -properly filled out and signed by parent.
2) Study guide for permit test.
3) List of identification documents to bring to DMV.
(Also available online at www.cyberdriveillinois.com within Rules of Road booklet)
*A $20 fee is required at DMV to obtain permit.Provided the student has turned in a copy of their permit to ABC, is paid in full and has no class make-ups, they will be assigned to a driving instructor. At some point after the classroom portion has concluded, the instructor will then call the student to schedule the driving. We pick up and drop off the student at the students house and driving time is scheduled conveniently between the instructor and student. We make every effort to finish the driving phase with the student before the student is eligible to get their license.
ABC processes the students paperwork to the SOS office. The SOS office further processes it and then the SOS mails the student a “Certificate of Completion” (no more “blue -slips”), in approximately 4-6 weeks. If the student does not receive this, please call ABC.
